Welcome to another issue of the Team Spotlight series at LayerX 🚀

In this series, we delve into the stories, experiences, and perspectives of the incredible people that make LayerX. Today, we get to chat with Carlos Mendes, Head of Marketing at LayerX, where we’ll get to know him and learn what it’s like to lead a Marketing team in the web3 ecosystem.

What does a typical workday look like for a Head of Marketing in the web3 ecosystem?

As Head of Marketing, my job requires me to stay on top of everything we do at LayerX, from ongoing campaigns to upcoming launches, and defining and implementing our marketing strategy.

I like to start my day by checking emails, Discord, and Telegram to stay updated on any overnight developments. Then, I plan my day and week ahead and get down to business.

There are no two days alike, and that’s what makes my job exciting — some days it feels like a walk on the beach, while others it’s like riding a rollercoaster 🎢

What do you appreciate most about LayerX’s culture?

The amazing work environment. We build friendships, not just co-worker relationships.

I’ve worked in companies where the atmosphere had you count down every minute until you could go home. But at LayerX, work feels meaningful and exciting.

I remember when a new member joined the team and told me they had heard great things about LayerX. When people who haven’t worked here vouch for you, it means you’re doing something right. That’s culture.

What excites you most about web3?

The power it has to transform our lives. Just look at how many industries can (and are) already implementing web3 tech. The idea of decentralization, where power and control shift away from a few major players to a broader community, is awesome. It’s like the internet’s rebelled and we get to reap the benefits.

What are the main challenges of working in Marketing within the Web3 ecosystem?

Keeping up with the fast pace of change. In this industry, things change constantly. It’s a big challenge to make a project stand out from the crowd.

On a larger scale, the biggest challenge, in my opinion, is the skepticism surrounding the industry. Many people still view crypto (and web3, in general) as fraudulent or untrustworthy.

Overcoming these perceptions will require continuous effort, and even though I believe security measures and legal actions will be necessary in the first instance, changing the public’s perception will ultimately depend on effective Marketing.

What part of your job do you find most fulfilling?

Seeing our strategies and initiatives pay off. There’s nothing like the thrill of watching a campaign you’ve poured your heart into to start to gain traction and deliver real results. Plus, the creative freedom and the constant learning keep things exciting. Every day brings a new challenge, and there’s never a dull moment around here.

What do you consider the most important in managing a team?

Giving room for people to take ownership of their work and have a voice is crucial. And equally important, creating an environment where your team can trust you and thrive on their own. When everyone feels valued and empowered, that’s when they contribute their best.

What are your top three resources for keeping up with web3 developments?

I enjoy digesting written content more than any other format, so newsletters are my favorite source to catch up on the news (particularly Milkroad). Then there’s X/Twitter — there’s a lot of noise, but following the right people can give you a constant stream of fresh information and diverse perspectives. And finally, podcasts. I usually listen to it when I go out for a run.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in web3?

Never stop learning and experimenting, even after you land a job. Web3 can be a challenging field to work in, but the sentiment you get from building the next generation of the web is unmatched. Stay curious and keep pushing the boundaries.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

I love to play sports — I run 2 to 3 times a week and play football on weekends. Spending quality time with my family and girlfriend is important to me, as is traveling (in fact, I’m currently writing this on a plane heading to Cote d’Azur, France 🏖️).

I also have to admit I’m a huge nerd about custom PC building 🤓 I’m on my third custom PC and I love every bit of the process: researching all the hardware components for hours on end, waiting for sales to buy the parts, and then taking an afternoon to put all the pieces together into a high-end machine. The feeling of turning on the power switch and realizing everything is working properly is amazing!

Tell us a fun fact about you.

I like pineapple on pizza 🍕 (Sorry, Italians)

Anything else you’d like to share with our community?

If there’s one thing I love about web3, it’s the communities. You can’t find fierce advocates like this anywhere else. Building together takes a whole new meaning in this space. Thanks for supporting us and being a part of our journey.

And that’s all for today folks!

Stay tuned for the next episode of our Team Spotlight series, where we’ll introduce you to another remarkable member of the LayerX family.
